Individual Extensions

Individual Extensions allow instructors to assign custom due dates for specific participants without affecting the rest of the class. This is commonly used for accommodations, make-up work, or approved deadline extensions. Extensions can be managed directly within Breakout Learning or, for Canvas users, synchronized automatically from Canvas assignment overrides.

Managing Individual Extensions

  1. Navigate to the assignment and open Assignment Settings.
  2. Within the Edit Assignment Dates modal, select Manage Extensions.

The Manage Date Extensions page displays:

  • The assignment's standard availability window for reference.
  • Existing individual extensions.
  • The ability to add new participant-specific extensions.

To create an extension:

  1. Select Add Extension.
  2. Search for and select one or more participants.
  3. Configure custom:
    • Available From Date
    • Due Date
  4. Save the extensions.

Multiple participants can share the same extension, or separate extensions can be created as needed.

Participants with an individual extension are identified by a flag in the Gradebook.

Canvas Integration

Canvas supports assigning different due dates to specific participants or groups of participants within the assignment settings.

To create an individual extension in Canvas:

  1. Open the Canvas assignment.
  2. Select Edit Assignment Settings.
  3. Scroll to the Assign Access section at the bottom of the assignment settings.
  4. Add one or more specific participants to a new Assign To block.
  5. Configure the custom due date (and availability dates, if applicable) for those Participants.
  6. Save the assignment.

When Breakout Learning is opened through Canvas, these individual assignment overrides are automatically synchronized.

For each participant extension, Breakout uses the later of:

  • the Canvas Due Date, or
  • the Canvas Available Until date,

as the participant's effective submission deadline.

Individual extensions for Canvas-integrated courses must always be managed in Canvas.

Notes

  • D2L does not support individual participant assignment deadlines through its integration. As a result, individual extensions cannot be managed for D2L-integrated assignments.
  • A common workaround for D2L courses is to keep the assignment available for the entire semester, allowing participants who receive accommodations or extensions to complete the assignment after the standard due date.
  • Individual extensions override the assignment's default dates only for the selected participants.
  • Creating an individual extension does not affect other participants in the class.
  • Extensions are intended for accommodations, make-up work, and approved deadline exceptions.
  • Individual extensions are visible to Instructors in the Gradebook via the extension flag.
