Creating an Assignment - Canvas Users

Configuring a Breakout Learning Experience via Canvas

 

1. Open the course workspace

Navigate to the assignment area

  • From the Canvas dashboard, select the course where you want to add an assignment.

  • Choose Assignments in the left navigation menu.

  • Select + Assignment to create a new item.

2. Configure basic assignment details

Set core information

  • Enter the assignment name and description.

  • Specify points, choose an assignment group, and select the grade display format.

  • Decide whether to exclude the assignment from the final grade.

3. Select Breakout Learning as the submission type

Link an external tool

  • Under Submission Type, choose External Tool.

  • Select Find, then choose Breakout Learning from the list.

  • Browse or search the catalog by title or keyword to locate an experience.

4. Review the experience overview

Examine instructional details

  • Confirm the estimated time, description, and learning objectives.

  • Review rubrics, instructor materials, pre-work materials, and downloadable PDFs.

  • Check the quiz section with marked correct answers.

  • Use Preview Experience to see the student view.

5. Set assignment delivery options

Choose grouping and grading preferences

  • Decide whether students select groups or the instructor assigns them, and set the maximum group size.

  • Choose whether the assignment is graded or ungraded.

  • If graded, define the grading criteria.

6. Finalize assignment settings

Prepare for course release

  • Confirm the assignment source is Breakout Learning.

  • Set the allowed number of attempts.

  • Use the Assign box to choose recipients: all students, specific sections, or individual students.

  • Add a due date, availability dates, and any date ranges.

7. Save and publish

Complete or pause setup

  • Select Save to return later or Save & Publish to release the assignment.

  • Review the configuration summary and confirm.
